Jesuit Commons Acceptable Use Policy:

Mission:

This policy defines the boundaries of “acceptable use” of limited electronic resources, specifically computers and networks relating to the Jesuit Commons community. Jesuit Commons Online is an online service consisting of electronic resources summarized above and designed to provide members of the Jesuit world (alumni, students, faculty, staff, parishioners, friends and Jesuits themselves) with the opportunity to foster innovative educational and social service collaborations across the Jesuit world to benefit very poor communities.


Policy:

It is the policy of Jesuit Commons to maintain an environment that promotes ethical and responsible conduct in all online network activities. It shall be a violation of this policy for any user to engage in any activity that does not confirm to the established purpose and general rules and policies of Jesuit Commons Online. By using these computing and web resources, users assume personal responsibility for appropriate use of these resources and agree to comply with these policies, as well as city, state, and U.S. federal laws and regulations.

Users of Jesuit Commons Online are strongly encouraged to review and understand the contents of this policy.


User Rights and Responsibilities:

As a user of Jesuit Commons Online, you have certain rights and responsibilities regarding the service’s use. Responsibilities include: respecting the rights and privacy of other users; respecting the legal protection provided by copyright and licensing of data and programs; respecting the intended use of resources; respecting the intended use of systems for electronic exchange, such as email; respecting the security and integrity of the network. Jesuit Commons expects community members to exhibit the same level of respect for others as in any Jesuit sponsored enterprise.


Electronic Privacy:

Jesuit Commons reserves the right to monitor and log any and all aspects of Jesuit Commons Online. While Jesuit Commons is not responsible for content of networks, projects, and bulletin boards, it does reserve the right to reorganize or delete any postings or message boards and may, at its discretion, reassign a topic’s ownership and/or delete content it believes to be objectionable. Services provided through Jesuit Commons Online have security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse, and alteration of the information under its control. While every effort is made to ensure the integrity and security of Jesuit Commons Online, we are unable to guarantee that such security measures will prevent third-party hackers from illegally obtaining this information. Users will be assigned account IDs and passwords for access to Jesuit Commons Online. Accounts are provided for the specific individual to whom they have been assigned.


Acceptable Use:

All use of Jesuit Commons Online must be consistent with the mission of Jesuit Commons. Jesuit Commons Online accounts are to be used only by the authorized owner of the account for the authorized purpose. The following constitutes acceptable use of the Jesuit Commons Online system: Contact with other users of Jesuit Commons Online in connection with the mission of Jesuit Commons; any other communications or activities that support and further the mission, goals, and activities of Jesuit Commons; announcements, postings and other forms of communication that are in line with the objectives and mission of Jesuit Commons.


Unacceptable Use:

Use of Jesuit Commons Online for: commercial or for-profit purposes; activities considered illegal or fraudulent; implied endorsements, approval, or sponsorship by Jesuit Commons; mass mailings or spamming; hate mail, harassment, discriminatory remarks, or other antisocial activities; dissemination or use of copyrighted material on Jesuit Commons Online without permission; the intentional misuse or dissemination of other users’ information; copying or modifying of files, data, or passwords belonging to other users; or the misrepresentation of other users; alteration of any computing or network components of Jesuit Commons Online without authorization or beyond one’s level of authorization; use in any way deemed inconsistent with the goals and mission of Jesuit Commons, the Society of Jesus, the Catholic Church; or for political, lobbying, and/or campaign purposes.


Enforcement:

Jesuit Commons Online will review activity that is alleged not to be in accordance with the acceptable use policy for Jesuit Commons Online. Jesuit Commons will deny further access to the secure portion of its website to those who engage in practices judged to be in violation of the acceptable use policy. In addition, Jesuit Commons may deny access to the secure portion of Jesuit Commons Online to any individual at any time. Where violations of this policy, may be unlawful, the matter may be referred for appropriate legal action.
