Jesuit Commons Privacy Policy:

Jesuit Commons has adopted its privacy policy to protect our online community of users, and promises that it will use their personal information only in ways that are compatible with the policies set forth here.

The following policies are in effect only for the web pages, newsletters, discussion lists, and announcement lists assembled by users of the Jesuit Commons web portal. These resources are collectively referred to as Jesuit Commons Online, the online community of the Jesuit world including alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents, friends, and Jesuits themselves.

Information Collection:

Jesuit Commons collects information when you visit our website, create an account, edit your account information, donate to a project, join a network, or volunteer. Some of this information is technical information that is automatically logged by our servers. When you create an account on our website, we collect basic information about you – your name, email address, city and country. You can choose to provide additional information such as your mailing address, a photo, favorite networks and projects, etc.

Every computer connected to the Internet is given a domain name and a set of numbers, which serve as the computer’s internet protocol (IP) address. When a visitor requests a page from any website within the Jesuit Commons network, the network’s web servers automatically recognize that visitor’s domain name and IP address. Domain names and IP addresses reveal nothing personal about users other than the IP address from which they have accessed the Jesuit Commons website. Jesuit Commons uses this information to examine its web traffic in aggregate and to investigate misuses of the Jesuit Commons network or to cooperate with law enforcement, when necessary. Jesuit Commons does not collect and evaluate information on specific individuals. Jesuit Commons’ web servers do not automatically record visitors’ email addresses. See also Disclosure of Information to Outside Third Parties below.

Registration:

Jesuit Commons offers access to networks and projects that require registration. Jesuit Commons may use registration contact information to notify registrants via email of news of interest about new networks, projects, or other Jesuit Commons activities.

No information from children under age 13:

Jesuit Commons does not collect information on the age of its registered users. While we are a network of people who wish to help poor communities, use of our site by children 13 an under is inappropriate. If we learn that someone 13 or younger has registered, we will delete that information as quickly as possible.  If a member of the Jesuit Commons network has any information of such a user, please contact us directly here.

Parential Participation:

We welcome the parents of minors to join our website and encourage minors who are 13 years or older to ask their parents for permission before sending any information about themselves to anyone over the Internet.  We encourage parents to teach their children about safe internet use practices.

Disclosure of Information to Outside Third Parties:

Jesuit Commons does not disclose personal information and/or IP addresses to third parties except under the following circumstances:

(a) When required by law or when Jesuit Commons has the good-faith belief that such action is necessary.

(b) Cooperate with the investigation of purported unlawful activities and conform to the edicts of the law or comply with legal processes served on Jesuit Commons.

(c) Protect and defend the rights or property of the Jesuit Commons network of sites and visitors.

(d) Identify persons who may be violating the law, Jesuit Commons user agreement, or the rights of third parties, or persons who are otherwise misusing the Jesuit Commons network. See “Registration above.”

When you donate to a Jesuit Commons “project,” we will share your personal information with our agents, representatives, service providers, and contractors in order to process your donations. These service providers are authorized to use your information only to the extent necessary to serve these purposes, complete financial transactions or as otherwise authorized by this policy. When you donate to a project, we share your name, gift amount, and the date of your donation with the Project Organizer who is overseeing the project and our Jesuit partner organizations who distribute the funds. Each time you make a donation we will give you the opportunity to tell us to keep your gift “anonymous,” that is to not share your personal information in the ways described above.

Jesuit Commons may periodically request users’ email or mailing addresses for the purposes of conducting a survey or for the purpose of announcing events or activities of interest to users. Whenever Jesuit Commons Online requests the identity of a visitor, the purpose of the inquiry will be clearly indicated. Jesuit Commons maintains a strict “no spam” policy. Jesuit Commons does not sell, rent, or otherwise provide email addresses to third parties unless doing so is permitted by this Privacy Policy or is consented to by the user.

We may share aggregated demographic and statistical information with our other Jesuit Partners (Jesuit Refugee Services, Fe y Alegria for example.) This is not linked to any personal information that can identify any individual person.

Links To Outside Websites:

The Jesuit Commons network contains many hyperlinks to third-party websites, and may also contain advertisements of third parties. Jesuit Commons is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such third party websites or advertisers. Jesuit Commons does not share users’ individual personal information with the third parties to which Jesuit Commons links, except as stated elsewhere within this privacy policy. Please check each third party website to determine its privacy policy.

Whenever users voluntarily disclose personal information online – for example through email, on discussion lists, or elsewhere – that information can be collected and used by others. If users post personal information in online venues that are accessible to the public, they may receive unsolicited messages from other parties. Ultimately, each user is solely responsible for maintaining the secrecy of his or her personal information. Users should be careful and responsible whenever they are online.

Cookies:

Jesuit Commons periodically may send “cookies” to users’ computers. A cookie is a small piece of data that is sent to the user’s Internet browser from a Web server and stored on the user’s computer hard drive. A cookie can’t read data from a computer’s hard disk or read cookie files created by other websites. Cookies do not damage computer systems. Jesuit Commons uses cookies to identify which areas of the Jesuit commons Network a user has visited or customized, so those pages may be readily accessible on the user’s next visit. Jesuit Commons may use this information to better personalize the content, banners, and other content that the users see on the Jesuit Commons website. Users can choose whether to accept cookies by changing the settings of their Internet browser. Browsers can be reset to refuse all cookies or to show when a cookie is being sent. If users choose not to accept cookies, their experiences on the Jesuit Commons website may be diminished and some features may not work as intended.
